The Virgin's Lament
Oh dear, oh dear,
what a burden to bear.
If someone would only
break this iceberg of mine.
It's stayed with me too long
and I'm weary of the load.
Oh someone, oh someone,
take this cold wall from me.
It once was the fashion to wear what I wear;
it was a mark of virtue--a badge of high honor.
But, lately, ever since I've come up in the world,
I find myself thinking all manner of thoughts
and most of them have nothing to do
with innocence or waiting for Mr. Right.
Oh dear, oh dear,
won't someone please hear
my plea for release
from these chains
which have held me
captive from birth.
I want to be free!
I want my garden gate opened.
And though I hope it's by someone
who is Prince Valiant's twin,
right now--any old frog
will do.
Oh dear, oh dear,
what a burden to bear.
If someone would only
break this iceberg of mine.
It's stayed with me too long
and I'm weary of the load.
Oh someone, oh someone,
take this cold wall from me.
It once was the fashion to wear what I wear;
it was a mark of virtue--a badge of high honor.
But, lately, ever since I've come up in the world,
I find myself thinking all manner of thoughts
and most of them have nothing to do
with innocence or waiting for Mr. Right.
Oh dear, oh dear,
won't someone please hear
my plea for release
from these chains
which have held me
captive from birth.
I want to be free!
I want my garden gate opened.
And though I hope it's by someone
who is Prince Valiant's twin,
right now--any old frog
will do.
