Incest is way, way up there in the list of taboos in this society (which is obsessed by the primacy of the traditional nuclear family). Father-daughter incest probably has the highest (most offensive) rating, followed by mother-son increst, then brother-sister incest - particularly if the brother is older than the sister (considered "abuse", no recourse). A lot of this is related to society's somewhat milder taboo (or finger-wagging) against sexual partners significantly different in age ("cougars", "dirty old men", etc.).

While I agree that family members shouldn't obsess over having such relationships, when they do develop they should be tolerated like anything else between consenting individuals. Current society has a long way to evolve before we reach that point, but it won't happen unless people actively push for it.

Even if incest is eventually tolerated, legally and socially, I think it will still retain an aura of taboo for a long, long time to come.

I've never been directly involved in incest, but I've encountered or known of a number of situations of consensual incest. One of the hottest was the best friend of my spouse #1 who had a fling with her dad and enjoyed telling us about it.

I think the only reason that I'm talking about it now is to emphasise that I truly
believe that she was right - it doesn't happen to everyone but it happens to
some, and I don't want to be made to feel guilty about it. Incest is so often
spoken about in the same breath as abuse, but if you're close in age and
equal in relationship terms then it's entirely different. Of course abuse
happens, but it can happen in any sexual relationship and there's an
expectation that a family member would never hurt you in the way that
someone else could. There's no comparison between siblings close in age
having sexual feelings and contact and an adult forcing a younger member of
the family to do something they neither understand nor want to be involved in.
I think incest is traditionally seen as bad, but in some cultures that isn't the
case. When I was small I asked a Sunday school teacher if Adam and Eve's
children married each other since they were the first people on earth. She just
laughed and didn't reply. Having children with Daniel was never an issue and
we were always careful about contraception.

All my memories of my relationship with Daniel are good. He's only a year
older than me and we've always been close, especially since we always
seemed to be full of nonsense compared with our older sister Jane. She's
four years older than Daniel and very studious and focused, while he's

I missed Daniel when he went to university, but went to stay with him every
three months or so. Sometimes we would have sex and at other times neither

a student, and I knew that this relationship was different, but it still came as a

shocked when he said: “You only have to say and I won't marry her, but then I

because no one else would have them! I know this is meant to be wrong but
I've never felt anything so right.” This echoed everything that I've thought
about our incestuous relationship over the years. After hours of discussion
we agreed that it was time to stop the sexual side of our relationship and also
decided that telling anyone else was a bad idea, parting in tears afterwards.

I know Daniel loves Alison, but she's very wary of me. I'm pretty sure that she
doesn't see me as a sexual threat, but she thinks of me as an emotional rival
and I suppose she's right. It's not unusual - there are countless people
dealing with all the emotions that result from partners becoming officially
family.

I have wondered if there will ever come a time when I'll look back on my
relationship with Daniel in disgust, but I don't think so. Everyone has
relationships where the sexual element has ended but a great friendship
remains, and that's as good a way as any of summing up what's happened
with us. Daniel has a unique place in my affections, as I do with him, and that
will never change.

As an academic I have a tendency to draw logical conclusions. I like to see a
pattern and resolution, so it does pain me that what appears so lovely and
natural to me would be regarded as abhorrent by most people. It's not my
subject, but I would be really interested to see a study on incest done on
these terms, moving it away entirely from the concept of abuse. However, I
simply cannot imagine that many people are happy to talk about it and I
certainly wouldn't put my family through hell by being the first to go public.

Three months ago I met Derek and I think this is going to be a lasting
relationship. The sex is certainly amazing and he's a warm and lovely man, so
I have high hopes for this. The trouble with having someone like Daniel in
your life is that it leaves you with very high expectations, but it's hard knowing
that the one person you love above everything is out of bounds. Perhaps
worst of all is the fact that you can't tell anyone, as his or her disgust would
ruin everything.

Looks like the relationship just happened. It's an individual experience that

I've had sex with my sister many, many times. We were each other's first lover. Many of my fantasies aren't really fantasies at all, but remembrances of making love to her.

As I've pointed out in a number of posts, both anecdotal evidence and research tend to suggest to me that incest among core family members is considerably more widespread than is generally assumed, and those who are enjoying this consensually should be allowed to continue to enjoy it without legal or societal disapproval or punishment.


When I do have actual fantasies about incest, they can vary from brother/sister, mother/son, aunt/nephew, cousins, etc, etc. I don't usually go in for father/daughter fantasies because of how often such situations are abusive in real life, but I'm not averse to hearing about truly consensual incest between a grown woman and her father.

Yesterday's Dr. Phil (yes, I watch Dr. Phil on occasion) focused on a 14-year-old young woman who was dressing "like a slut" (to the point that she looked like a 20-year-old) and obviously was not just sexually active but sexually aggressive. She appeared extremely precocious, bright, and aware of her situation, needs, etc. (Intensive adolescent sexuality can be an expression of accelerated development/intelligence...) For the record, Dr. Phil was basically horrified (in many respects his mindset is still in the 19th century) ...

Young women like this can be very sexually active and even initiate an incestuous relationship with their brothers or fathers (or other male extended-family members). That should not be branded as abuse, nor should adults that are involved be criminalized for their involvement...

I had a very incestuous upbringing. To this day I still look back on it with very mixed feelings. Basically, and I don't know why really to this day as both of my parents are now dead, they both wanted to make sure that I was fully educated in sex by them.

They told me that the family doctor had discussed it with them and told them it would be better for me to learn as much as I could from them before i became sexually active. Whether they took his meaning too literally or not, I still don't know.

To cut a long story short I had sex with both my mother and father before I was 15 years old. And more than once. A good caveat, and any parent needs to be very cautious - young people, especially adolescents, tend to be very impressionable. However, there is also evidence that incestuous sexual relationships can work with beneficial results in the right instances. It's critical to make sure that the younger person is participating willfully and consensually - enthusiasm is a good gauge. A parent or other older person can communicate desire and create opportunity, but it's critical that the mom, dad, uncle, aunt, older sibling, or whoever be extremely sensitive to get fully consensual feedback in every step of the progress toward a sexual relationship.

While I do appreciate the sentiment of your reply, I think you missed my point.
At the age I am refering to, and with a sheltered upbringing, enthusiam is always there from the younger sibling after the first occurence. Only later does the gravity of the situation become apparent to that person. In my case, I always thought in the back of my mind that I was abnormal, for many years, and it seriously effected my interaction with the opposite sex. Alcohol and drugs followed as a means of being comfortable in my own skin, especially with women. Only when one has reached a level of maturity to accept the events of the past do things fall into place. Then one can finally realize they have no guilt in the matter.

I now have a wife and two beautiful daughters. Occassionaly when I hug or kiss my daughters I think to myself that if I ever even remotely think of them sexually, even when they've grown up, then I'll put the bullet in my own head. Thats my hangover from my experiences. Maybe not the case for all I agree. But it works for me.
